Michelle Nyambura is a fulltime visual artist based in Nairobi
Kenya. Born in 2001 in Nairobi County, she developed an
interest in drawing from a very young age which led to her
pursuing art fulltime from 2018. She mainly uses threads on
canvas, watercolors as a medium and also explores other
mediums. Her work is inspired by her surrounding
environments. Nyambura would like her art to document,
inspire, express and have life in its diverse states.
Artist statement;
My art centers on the material and symbolic potential of thread
as a medium for connecting themes, emotions, and cultural
memory. By reimagining traditional textile practices through a
contemporary lens. I aim to explore how threads both as a
physical material and a metaphor, can articulate intersections of
personal and collective identity. Drawing from historical craft
traditions (e.g., embroidery, weaving, or darning) I express how
repetitive, labor-intensive processes mirror human relationships
and societal structures. A key question driving this work is: How
can thread on canvas evoke narratives of displacement, repair, or
resilience.
