Wanjiku Creative Spaces

Visual Artist | Art Educator | Artvocate for Climate & Gender Justice | Urban Organic Farmer

I’m Shivan Nafula, a 29-year-old visual artist and art educator based in Nairobi, Kenya. Since 2017, I’ve cultivated a practice rooted in Afro-tribal pattern work and cultural geometry—what I explore through the lens of Ethnomathematics. My work is deeply inspired by traditional African symbolism, geometry in motion, and the healing language of warm sunset tones. I use this aesthetic not just to create beauty, but to build bridges—between stories, between wounds and healing, between the seen and the silenced.

As an artvocate, I center my creative work around community transformation, climate consciousness, and mental wellness. I teach arts and crafts to youth in underserved communities, facilitating creative spaces where expression becomes a form of liberation. In May 2025, I completed Superheroes of Kibera Vol. 2, a two-week creative workshop where 20 children used recycled and reusable materials to craft their own narratives. The workshop culminated in a public exhibition, co-curated with the kids, which celebrated sustainability, identity, and environmental awareness.

I have also been invited to participate in “Her Voice, Her Power”, a group exhibition opening on 9th August 2025, which brings together 10 women artists to amplify the voices of survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and femicide in our community. One of the featured narratives in this exhibition holds deep personal weight for me—my art partner, a survivor of a recent brutal attack, is one of the stories I will be holding space for through my visual storytelling. This exhibition is a form of public resistance, testimony, and reclamation.

My creative vision is to shift how communities see themselves—through lines, colors, textures, and metaphors that echo truth and resilience. Whether teaching a child or a young woman to sculpt kitchen garden pots, hope from discarded metal or painting the quiet strength of a survivor into public view, I use art as both mirror and movement.
